I like small woodland creatures, nice typography, waffles, and Will Smith. What else do you need to know?

Greenpoint Perks

Most delicious puffy sweet cheesy bread I have ever eaten.

From Bakery Rzeszowska, on the corner of Java and Manhattan.

One of the many reasons I love living in Greenpoint.

New Years Feasts

This New Years we were lucky enough to have Chelsea, Matt, and Cameron come to town to celebrate 2012 with us. Since we all love to cook (and eat), we made two really great New Years Feasts: a Hungover New Years Brunch and a Lucky New Years Dinner.

Not many photos were taken due to the Hungover element of Hungover brunch, but we did make a pretty delicious frittata, and I managed to take one photo:

For dinner we made a Lucky Feast. According to Southern tradition, certain foods symbolize things you want for the new year. For example:

♥  Greens (here, kale + onions + mushrooms + garlic + balsamic) symbolize folding money

♥  Black Eyed Peas are for good luck and sometimes symbolize coins

♥  The pork (or, chicken sausage) is to remember to be humble

Tiny Kitchen Fall

Big fall update on Tiny Kitchen Blog. Read it, follow it, enjoy it!

Crispy tofu, for Tofu Pad Thai.

Press a block of extra-firm tofu under a plate and book/heavy object for 30 mins. Then, slice tofu into quarter inch thick slices. Toss slices with equal parts olive oil and lime juice. Sprinkle with paprika and toss to coat. Place on a lined baking tray and bake at 425F for 20-30 mins. Tofu is done when brown and crispy on both sides.

When prepared this way, tofu can be a great addition to pad thai, or a myriad of other dishes!

I’m a little embarrassed about the (poor) quality of this photo, but it’s only because I was so excited to see my glyph set KNOTS featured in a recent Housing Works publication! I believe this mini-booklet was produced for Housing Works Catering, and I think these glyphs are well-suited to this context. The bronze ink on coated paper really makes those delicate lines stand out, and the typeface used throughout (VistaSans) pairs really nicely with the glyphs.
Thanks to friend Ben Tuttle for sharing this booklet with me, and to my former professor and current Housing Works Creative Director Silas Munro for using KNOTS.

Two weeks ago I saw this exhibition — “Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts” — at the Park Avenue Armory, and it was amazing. I never imagined a quilt show (put on by the Folk Art Museum!) could be quite like this. They way the quilts were hung, the lighting, and the actual pieces themselves were all so cool. Also, all those beautiful patterns? Basically just some glyphs waiting to be vectorized. There were many old ladies there, I’m not going to lie, but this exhibition was an awesome way to take traditional craft and exhibit it in a cool, contemporary way.

This weekend, we went to the beach with Henry and Dave, and I held some seaweed. 100% regular.

Tonight I saw John Downer speak about sign painting in immigrant communities at the amazing Cooper Union on the Lower East Side. It was amazing and extremely exciting to hear someone speak who has designed several famous Emigre typefaces, most of which I have used! (This is Brothers).

On Saturday I made these delicious scones. I was a little nervous since I am primarily a Chef, and not a Baker, but they turned out so well! I think most of the credit goes to Smitten Kitchen for the recipe, but I am still proud.
